Alright, so I stumbled on this study by Incogni that basically breaks down which social media platforms are safest and which ones, well, not so much. And I gotta admit, some of this stuff was pretty wild! We’re all on social media like 24/7, but turns out, not all of these apps care about keeping our info safe. Social Media Privacy is becoming more important as platforms collect and store our personal data. Here’s my personal take on what I found.
The Good and The Bad Platforms
Okay, so no big shocker here—the riskiest platforms when it comes to privacy were Facebook and LinkedIn. These guys scored the worst in the study, which means your personal info is basically not as safe as you’d hope. Facebook Messenger and Instagram weren’t too far behind either. Instagram was like 4th on the list of “worst” apps. Ugh, I use Instagram all the time.
But here’s something cool: Reddit and Snapchat are actually the safest! They got the best scores for keeping your data protected. Even Pinterest wasn’t too bad. Who would’ve thought? Snapchat’s known for its disappearing messages, and Reddit… well, guess it’s not just memes, right?
Data Hangover
One thing that really freaked me out—these platforms can keep your data for up to 6 months after you delete your account! Like, I thought deleting an account meant poof your info’s gone. Nope. Even if you’ve said goodbye to a platform, your data sticks around for half a year. This is super risky if there’s a hack or leak during that time.
On the flip side, Telegram was actually the safest when it comes to how much data they collect. They don’t hoard your info like some other apps do. But Instagram? At the very bottom for data collection. No surprise there though, with all the targeted ads we get.
Meta Strikes Again
You know what’s crazy? Almost all the platforms that scored the worst for privacy—Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp—they’re all owned by Meta. Yeah, four out of the top worst ones. It’s like Meta’s not even trying to keep our stuff safe. The only slight win was WhatsApp ‘cause it has end-to-end encryption, but the rest? Nah, not great at all.

What Does This Mean For Us?
In the end, this study kinda opened my eyes to how unsafe social media can be. Like, we really gotta be more careful about what we post and share. If you’re super into keeping your data private, maybe consider using apps like Telegram or Reddit instead. It’s also a big wake-up call for these platforms to seriously step up their security game.
