The Trump and Elon Musk Government Efficiency Plan aims to streamline federal spending and introduce major reforms if Trump wins a second term as president.
Donald Trump said he wants Elon Musk to run a “Government Efficiency Commission” if he wins another term as US president. He talked about it at the Economic Club of New York on Thursday, saying Musk agreed to lead a group that would do a big financial check of the whole government and suggest big changes to make it better.
For weeks, both Trump and Musk have hinted at this idea, but Thursday was the first time Trump directly said Musk might help in his future government.
Musk even posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises. No pay, no title, no recognition is needed.”
It shows he’s open to helping, even though he and Trump haven’t always been close. But now, they’ve been getting along better as Trump runs for president again in 2024.
Musk publicly backed Trump in July after Trump was shot at a rally in Pennsylvania. Musk has also donated money to support Trump’s campaign. During an online talk with Trump on 13 August, Musk said, “I think we need a government efficiency commission to check where we’re spending money wisely and where we’re not. We need to live within our means.”
A few days later, Musk posted a funny AI-made image of himself at a podium labeled “Department of Government Efficiency,” jokingly saying he’s ready to serve. People online liked the joke because the initials of the group spell out “doge,” a popular meme.
While some saw it as a joke, Trump seems serious about working with Musk if he wins. Trump’s campaign advisor, Brian Hughes, said Trump was excited that someone like Musk, who cares about America’s future, would be willing to help make the government work better.
Trump made this announcement in front of a special group of business leaders in New York. He mostly talked about the economy during his speech, saying he would cut taxes, reduce government rules, open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil drilling, and raise tariffs to help US manufacturing. He also promised to bring back jobs in the auto industry to the levels they were at years ago.
Trump suggested a super low tax rate of 15% for companies that make stuff in the US, compared to the 20% general rate he suggested for other companies. Kamala Harris, his opponent, has suggested a 28% rate.
He didn’t seem too worried about cutting taxes making the US deficit worse, saying that the US would “make our money back on growth.” He also suggested creating a national investment fund using money from tariffs.
Although the audience was mostly quiet, many clapped when Trump talked about Musk supporting him. When asked if he would remove sanctions on Russia, Trump didn’t give a clear answer but said he thinks the Biden administration has used sanctions too much. He prefers using sanctions for short times and as little as possible, so other countries don’t try to avoid using the US financial system and dollar.
