As such, returning to Chennai on Friday, the spin legend from Tamil Nadu, Ravichandran Ashwin dropped the bombshell that he is retiring from international cricket after the third Test in the 2024-25 Border–Gavaskar Trophy. It’s crazy, right? A 38 year old cricketer who was very much part of India’s cricket scene for so long is calling off his career. Like, wow, what a career!
In 2010, Ashwin made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka and then Zimbabwe, and his debut in Tests against West Indies in 2011. He started to make an impact immediately and took a massive 9 wickets in that match, even if one innings ended up with a 6 wicket-haul.
Since then, he has almost become a constant in India’s lineup across formats. That winning run that he hit against Pakistan in the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is something that still leaves me in chills — the moment was one of his last T20I appearances.
He has played in the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 in Chennai, which was awesome, because it was at his home ground. However, now he has decided he’s ready for the boots to be hung up after that third Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. 765 wickets in 287 international matches is insane for the guy’s career stats. He has been in the middle of more than 100 Test matches, not to mention a ton of record.

Ashwin picked 537 wickets in 106 Tests and over 3,500 runs. He also scored 6 centuries with bat and grabbed 37 five wicket hauls. Reaching 350 Test wickets in fastest possible time was one of his most notable achievements. Crazy, right? He was a part of India’s 2011 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup winning side and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy side too.
After Ashwin’s announcement, the BCCI gave him a special shoutout on social media, calling him a “wizard” and an “invaluable all-rounder” for Team India. It’s safe to say that the cricket world’s gonna miss this guy’s skills and insane consistency on the field.
