Marvel Studios has just released the first official trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World,” marking the fourth film in the Captain America series. This movie is significant because it will not feature Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. As fans may recall, Steve Rogers chose to live a peaceful life through time travel at the end of “Avengers: Endgame.”
Now, the iconic shield has been passed to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. We saw Sam grappling with this immense responsibility in his own miniseries, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” back in 2021. Interestingly, Bucky Barnes, who has been a constant presence in the Captain America films, will not appear in this movie. Instead, Bucky is headed to the “Thunderbolts,” and this change is something the actors have expressed their thoughts about publicly.
The new trailer feels more akin to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” than the other two films, positioning it as an action-packed espionage thriller. In this storyline, Sam Wilson is on a mission to uncover a conspiracy against President Thaddeus Ross. The character of President Ross has been recast, shifting from William Hurt (in the canonically included “Incredible Hulk”) to another actor. It’s worth noting that Bruce Banner also saw a significant recasting, from Ed Norton to Mark Ruffalo. Marvel fans will remember seeing Tim Roth’s Abomination in “She-Hulk,” and now Liv Tyler is set to reprise her role as Betty Ross in this film.

The teaser of Red Hulk in the “Captain America: Brave New World” trailer
In the trailer, we catch a glimpse of Giancarlo Esposito’s mysterious character, who appears to be a non-comic character driving the explosive events of the film. Additionally, The Leader, a character already announced, makes an appearance. The trailer ends with a thrilling teaser of Red Hulk, who has also been featured in promotional posters. For comic book aficionados, the human form of Red Hulk is well-known, unless the film decides to make significant changes from the source material. Red Hulk is indeed President Ross himself, and he is usually a villainous Hulk, setting the stage for a confrontation with Captain America.
“Captain America: Brave New World” is slated for release on February 14, 2025. This film will follow the release of “Deadpool and Wolverine” in July. The movie has been surrounded by controversy, with rumors of story rewrites and reshoots. One particular point of contention is the inclusion of Sabra, an Israeli superhero, which was decided before the current Israel/Gaza conflict. However, Sabra does not appear in the trailer.
The big question now is how a Captain America movie without Steve Rogers will perform at the box office. Changing the actor for a main superhero is always a significant move, even if it fits within the storyline. This transition aligns with comic book plotlines, but it’s a considerable risk for Marvel to try and position Sam Wilson as the new leader of the Avengers, especially with two new Avengers movies on the horizon. It remains to be seen if Wilson will assume the leadership role that Steve Rogers once held.
Overall, the trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World” looks promising, though it doesn’t deliver any jaw-dropping moments. We can expect more promotional material leading up to the February release. As a fan, I’m excited to see how this new chapter in the Captain America saga unfolds and how Sam Wilson will step up to the mantle of Captain America.
It is very clear that the true Marvel fans are going to miss Steve Rogers as Captain America (Chris Evans). But, as we say, this world runs on that little hope. So, we never know. Me, being a true Marvel fan who has watched all of the Marvel movies is hoping for return of Steve Rogers in this movie. But, we will have to wait till February 2025.
