France Protests Over Michel Barnier as PM After Macron’s Controversial Choice

France Protests Over Michel Barnier’s Appointment as Prime Minister Spark Nationwide Demonstrations!

So, tons of people are protesting all over France because Emmanuel Macron picked Michel Barnier as the new prime minister, even though the left-wing parties got the most seats in the last election. People are upset because they wanted their own candidate, Lucie Castets, to be chosen instead.

There are protests happening in big cities like Paris, Marseille, and Nice. The protests were put together by trade unions and left-wing parties, who are mad about Barnier being picked. He’s known as the guy who handled Brexit stuff for the EU, and he’s open to working with politicians from all sides, even the left.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who’s a big voice from the radical left party, France Unbowed, is leading the protests. He wants a huge turnout and gave a speech in Paris from a float saying, “For democracy, stop Macron’s coup.” People are shouting things like “denial of democracy” and “stolen election.”

The left is super angry because Macron didn’t choose Castets as prime minister. He said she wouldn’t survive a confidence vote in the National Assembly. Meanwhile, Barnier might pass a confidence vote because the far-right party, National Rally, said they won’t automatically vote against him. This makes people worry that Barnier’s government will rely on the far right.

While all this is going on, Barnier visited a children’s hospital in Paris and talked about public services, saying his government “won’t perform miracles.” He’s working on putting together a new government, and so far, he says things are going well after talks with other political groups.

Some people on the left are blaming themselves for Barnier becoming prime minister. Socialist Mayor Anne Hidalgo said Macron even thought about picking another Socialist, Bernard Cazeneuve, but his party didn’t support him. Another Socialist, Karim Bouamrane, said the left was too stubborn, and now they’ve ended up with nothing.
