Something sad happened in the West Bank. Israeli violence in West Bank has resulted in the deaths of many Palestinians, including children, and has sparked international concern and condemnation. Six people died, including two children. Five of them died when Israel dropped bombs on a place called Nur Shams, where many people live. Israel said they were trying to stop some bad people, but many innocent people got hurt instead.
Another person was shot dead, and three others were hurt during an attack by Israeli settlers near Bethlehem, according to the Palestinian health ministry. The Israeli army said they were looking into it.
Since the fighting in Gaza started on October 7, things have gotten really bad in the West Bank. A lot more people are getting hurt or killed. The UN says that 128 Palestinians, including 26 kids, have died in Israeli air strikes in the West Bank. That’s not all – 607 Palestinians have died in total, including 11 who were killed by Israeli settlers. On the other side, 15 Israelis have died in attacks by Palestinians in the West Bank, and 10 more Israelis were killed in Israel by people from the West Bank. It’s all really sad and scary.
Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the air strike on Nur Shams camp was done by an Israeli drone on Monday night. Four loud explosions were heard. The Palestinian health ministry said the people who died were Mohannad Qarawi, 19, Jibril Jibril, 20, Adnan Jaber, 15, Mohammed Yusif, 49, and Mohammed Elayyan, 16. One of them, Jibril Jibril, was a member of Hamas who had been released from an Israeli prison in November in an exchange deal.
Nur Shams camp has been hit by the Israeli army several times in the past few months. Back in April, 14 people were killed there during a two-day Israeli operation, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.
Later on Monday, the health ministry said that a 40-year-old man named Khalil Salem Khalawi was shot dead in an attack by Israeli settlers in a village called Wadi Rahhal, near Bethlehem. Three others were injured. Wafa reported that the head of the village, Hamdi Ziada, said settlers attacked homes near a boys’ school and that Israeli forces came to protect the settlers and used tear gas on the residents.
Israel’s Ynet news website said that Mr. Khalawi was an Israeli Arab and that he was shot by Israeli soldiers after settlers claimed that stones were thrown at an Israeli car. The Israeli army said they were investigating this, which happened two weeks after another Palestinian man was shot dead in a similar attack by settlers in the village of Jit.
Israel took control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967. Since then, they’ve built a lot of settlements – around 160! About 700,000 Jewish people live in these settlements. But here’s the thing: most countries think these settlements shouldn’t be there and are against the law. Israel doesn’t agree, though. They think it’s okay. It’s a big disagreement!
