Léon Marchand Becomes a French Legend
Sometimes in sports, you see someone become a legend right in front of you. That happened on Wednesday night.
At La Défense Arena near Paris, fans were waving French flags and waiting for Léon. Léon Marchand did something amazing: he won two individual swimming gold medals in one night, setting two Olympic records.
The arena was super loud. When Marchand’s first race was announced, the crowd started chanting, “Lé-on! Lé-on!” When he came out, the cheering got even louder. The buzzer went off, and everyone was shouting again.
In his first race, the 200-meter butterfly, Marchand was behind at first. Hungarian Kristóf Milák was leading for most of the race. But in the last 50 meters, Marchand kicked off the wall and zoomed past Milák. The crowd went wild. When Marchand hit the wall first, the noise was deafening.
“I could hear the whole pool going crazy. That’s why I won. I used the energy from the crowd,” Marchand said.
After a few semifinals, the crowd had a break before Marchand came out again. They sang “La Marseillaise,” the French national anthem, with full energy.
Then, Marchand had to swim again. You might think he’d be tired, but after another break, he was ready. The crowd started chanting “Lé-on!” again.
This time, Marchand led from the start. Every time he surfaced, the crowd cheered louder. He touched the wall first, breaking another Olympic record. The crowd went crazy again.
Even if they didn’t know they were seeing history, they knew they saw something special. Marchand told reporters it would take a while for it all to sink in.
His coach, Bob Bowman, who also coached Michael Phelps, said the night was amazing. But he knows the challenge of handling success. Marchand will have to go back to training and keep improving.
Legends like Marchand always find a way to get even better.
