What is SOS on iPhone & How to Fix It: My Real Experience

Okay, let me share something that actually scared me, at least initially, on my iPhone – the letters SOS. I am sure you have come across it before we times you felt you were wondering what is going on? Well, don’t panic! Not as bad as it looks but it signifies something is wrong with your phone connection. Hold on! I can now explain it to you in my humble English.

What SOS on iPhone Means?

So, here’s the deal. When “SOS” or “SOS only” pops up on your iPhone, it just means your phone can’t connect to your regular network provider. It happens when you’re in a spot with no signal, like a dead zone, or if there’s some technical issue. But the cool part? Even though you can’t make normal calls or send texts, you can still call emergency services, which is super helpful.

For example, let’s say you’re on T-Mobile but have no signal. If there’s Verizon or AT&T signal in the area, your phone might still let you make that emergency call. Pretty awesome, right? This works in countries like the U.S., Canada, and Australia.

What To Do When You See SOS?

Okay, now if you’re like me and see SOS, don’t freak out. Here’s what I usually try:

  1. Restart Your iPhone – Just turn it off and on again. It’s simple but works a lot of times.
  2. Airplane Mode Trick – Turn on Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds, then turn it off again. This forces your phone to reconnect to the network, and it might just fix the issue.

If these don’t work and you notice everyone around you has full signal, it’s probably time to call your network provider and ask what’s up.

How to Make an Emergency Call with SOS?

If you’re in a real emergency and the SOS sign shows up, here’s what to do:

  1. Dial Your Country’s Emergency Number – if you are in the US the number is 911.
  2. Slide for Emergency –Hold down the side button and a volume button together until you see the emergency slider. Slide it, and boom, you’re calling for help.
  3. Emergency Settings – If you press a side button five times in a row, you’ll be able to make an emergency call.
