Mental health misconceptions can lead to significant barriers in accessing proper care and support. In South Asian countries, misconceptions among people about mental health mostly results into contagious beliefs such as confusing the mental health challenges to the evil eye or black magic. These cultural beliefs create social stigmas, creating hurdles in seeking proper mental health guidance, and create barriers in seeking help. This writing highlights such misconceptions and importance of raising education regarding this among South Asian communities.Mental Health Misconceptions

In South Asia, people are known for their traditional beliefs and practices and here mental health issues are sometimes peeped through a spiritual or supernatural lens. Mental Conditions like depression, anxiety, or schizophrenia are mostly misunderstood as manifestations of curses or spiritual afflictions rather than diagnosed as medical conditions that require professional treatment and help. This can lead to individuals facing discrimination, isolation, and life taking measures .

These are often very damaging, as a person suffering may fear judgement or ostracism if they share their struggles. This fear of being labelled as “possessed” or “cursed” can prevent individuals from seeking help from mental health professionals and instead turn to traditional healers or religious practices, which may not address the root causes of their mental health issues.

To fight such stigmas that mental health issues are caused by the evil eye or black magic to avoid the sufferings of the one really fighting, we need to launch campaigns to educate people about mental health. We should also make sure mental health services are respectful of different cultures and languages, involve community leaders to spread awareness, and show positive mental health stories in the media. By doing these things, we can help people change their beliefs and support those dealing with mental health problems.
