The Sicily yacht wreck has made headlines due to the tragic loss of several lives. So, here’s what happened. Divers found a sixth body after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily. The body is believed to be that of 18-year-old Hannah Lynch, according to Italian news. Hannah was the last person still missing after the yacht sank earlier this week.
Before this, the bodies of her father, Mike Lynch, who was a tech entrepreneur, and five others were already brought to shore. The yacht, named Bayesian, went down during a freak storm near the Italian fishing village of Porticello, which is east of Palermo.
There were 22 passengers and crew on board, but only 15 survived, including a one-year-old child and Hannah’s mother, Angela Bacares. Some of the others who didn’t make it include Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International, his wife Judy, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda, and the boat’s chef, Recaldo Thomas.
The yacht is at the bottom of the sea, around 50 meters (164 feet) deep. Rescuers have been working on this since Monday, but it’s been really hard because divers can only stay underwater for 12 minutes at a time. The Italian Coastguard said they’re not planning to bring the yacht up right now, but they might think about it later. According to the divers, the ship is still “practically intact” down there.
