England vs Australia First T20i was a thriller as New-England team lost to Australia by 28 runs at the Utilita Bowl.
Australia got off to a strong start, with Travis Head smashing 59 off 23 balls, and his partner Matthew Short added 41 off 26 balls. They scored 86 runs in the first six overs. However, England, with three debut players and Phil Salt as captain for the first time, fought back well to bowl Australia out for 179. Liam Livingstone was the star bowler, taking 3-22, while Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, and Saqib Mahmood chipped in with wickets too.
England’s chase didn’t go well from the start, as they lost three wickets early. Livingstone and Sam Curran tried to save the game by adding 54 runs together, but when they both got out, England’s lower-order batsmen couldn’t keep up. England ended up getting bowled out for 151 in the last over, falling short by 28 runs.
The next match will take place in Cardiff, followed by the final game in the series at Old Trafford.
Australia’s Early Fireworks
Australia started strong, with their openers smashing England’s bowlers all over the place. Short hit two big sixes off Reece Topley, and Head followed with three sixes in a row against Sam Curran. Head raced to 50 off just 19 balls, making it the fastest half-century by an Australian in T20s. He was eventually dismissed by Mahmood, but Australia looked set for a huge total.
England’s spinners turned things around. Rashid bowled Mitchell Marsh, and Livingstone took over, getting rid of Short and later trapping Marcus Stoinis and Tim David lbw in consecutive deliveries. Despite Josh Inglis holding things steady for Australia, England’s bowlers finished the innings strong. Archer and Mahmood took wickets with perfect yorkers, and Australia got bowled out before completing their 20 overs.
England’s Struggles with the Bat
Unfortunately for England, their batting lineup couldn’t match Australia’s firepower. Will Jacks got out early, debutant Jordan Cox and Salt followed soon after, and when Jacob Bethell (also on debut) was bowled by Zampa, England found themselves at 52-4.
Livingstone and Curran tried to rebuild the innings but just as they were picking up pace, Abbott got Curran out. Livingstone, who made 37 off 27 balls, was bowled by Hazlewood three balls later, and from there, it was tough for England. Zampa bowled Jamie Overton on his T20I debut, and although the tailenders took the game to the final over, they never really looked like they could win it.
England’s top seven, with three new players and no Jos Buttler, will have to learn fast to compete in the rest of the series.
Injuries and Reactions
Australia might be worried about fast bowler Xavier Bartlett, who hurt himself during his final over and could miss the next two matches.
Travis Head, who won Player of the Match, said: “It was a nice start, and it felt good to help set a solid platform for the team.”
England captain Phil Salt admitted: “Everything was good except for the result. Australia bowled well, and Head gave them a big start in the powerplay.”
Australia captain Mitchell Marsh joked: “We were on track for 200, but we messed it up a bit, so it’s nice to still come away with a win.”
