Apple Gets FDA Approval for AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Aid Mode
Just last week, Apple got the go-ahead from the US FDA on the hearing aid mode in its newest AirPods Pro 2.
Apple recently has been heavily investing in health-related features of their products. It has said that not-so-older AirPods Pro 2 should be used as hearing aids but were just waiting for approval from FDA. Finally, it has got the green light from them.
This led the FDA to declare the hearing aid feature in AirPods Pro 2 exempt and, thus, these are very literally the first hearing aids you can buy without a prescription. To date, a few hearing aids exist in the US which do not require a prescription, but none have the same FDA green light as this.
Coming in an Update
This new feature will arrive on the AirPods Pro 2 with an update and will be called “hearing support.” To use it, people will take a hearing test with their AirPods and iPhones. If the test shows any hearing loss, a custom sound profile will be made, and the sound will adjust to the needed level using dynamic sound editing.
Apple said this hearing support feature is medical-grade and will help users have better conversations and stay connected to their environment and people.
The personalized hearing profiles will automatically work with music, movies, games, and phone calls, so users won’t need to change any settings. The hearing test feature will also let users create different profiles for various sound frequencies and will switch between them automatically.
