The Gaza War Death Toll continues to rise, sparking outrage over Israel’s Brutality In Gaza. Israel’s attacks on Gaza have caused widespread destruction and killed over 40,000 Palestinians, including many women, children, and elderly people, since October 7th.
The death toll is very high, equal to about 1 in 50 people in Gaza, which has a population of 2.3 million. Additionally, nearly 60% of Gaza’s buildings have been damaged or destroyed, with Rafah being the most affected city.
The Ministry of Health’s figures did not distinguish the dead as civilians or combatants, but most of them were children, women, or old people. However, Israel’s military has put the number of terrorists killed at 15,000, and that is likely an overstatement because they say so. But without independent reporters in Gaza, none of these numbers are verifiable.
In the past, the numbers from Gaza’s Ministry of Health (MoH) were considered reliable by the UN and other international organizations. They used to keep track of deaths through hospitals, where they would collect names and other details. But now, the situation is so chaotic with fighting around hospitals, and bad phone and internet connections, that it’s difficult to get accurate numbers.
The UN and other organizations are using the numbers from Gaza’s MoH, but they stress that these figures can’t be independently verified because of the situation on the ground. Israel has often questioned these numbers, calling them “fake data.”
Experts believe the actual death toll might be even higher, with around 10,000 bodies possibly still buried under rubble from Israeli airstrikes. Even after the war ends, more people could die from things like disease and hunger because of the destruction.
In the city of Rafah, satellite images show that a lot of buildings have been destroyed, especially after Israel launched an attack there in early May. This attack was part of Israel’s goal to take control of the area and defeat the remaining Hamas fighters. Videos and images from social media and the Israeli military show that large parts of Rafah, especially near the border with Egypt, have been completely wiped out.
For example, a neighborhood along the border was flattened within a month of the operation starting. Key landmarks in Rafah, like the border crossing, mosques, and the main market, have also been destroyed. Videos even show Israeli tanks crushing a “Welcome to Gaza” sign at the Rafah border crossing, and the famous Al-Najma roundabout is now heavily damaged.
The war began when thousands of Hamas fighters attacked southern Israel on October 7th, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli reports.
