On August 27, Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board Control Cricket in India (BCCI), was appointed both as an ICC President and general chairman. The current ICC Chief Greg Barclay will soon be succeeded by him. On December 1 Jay Shah takes up the role. He’s just 35. He is the youngest ever ICC chairman. His tenure will last for three years. Additional three if he wants!
Everyone is excited to see what changes will come with Jay Shah as ICC Chief.
Here’s what you can expect from Jay Shah as the ICC chief:
1. Bringing Back Test Cricket
Jay Shah wants to make Test cricket popular again. With so much focus on T20 leagues, Test cricket has been losing its charm. Shah might push for more efforts to make Test cricket exciting, especially for smaller countries. He’s said before that Test cricket is really important and should be a priority for everyone. He could even bring in new ideas to make each Test series more valuable and maybe even introduce more Day-Night Tests, which usually get more viewers.
2. Making Cricket More Global
One of Shah’s big goals is to make cricket popular around the world. With cricket set to be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Shah wants to make sure it’s a big success. He’s committed to working with the ICC and other countries to spread the game. The recent T20 World Cup had 20 teams, which helped more people watch the game. Shah will likely keep trying to bring more countries into the cricket scene and make them competitive.
3. Taking ICC Events to New Heights
Cricket is at a crucial point, especially with so many nations now involved in ICC events. But the 2024 T20 World Cup didn’t go so well, with problems like bad pitches and overshooting budgets. Shah has a great track record with big events, like organizing the IPL during the COVID-19 pandemic and making the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE a success. As ICC chief, he’ll likely dig deep into what went wrong in 2024 and work to make future ICC events much better for everyone involved.
