New Western sanctions on Iran 2024 have prompted Tehran to deny sending weapons to Russia, labeling the sanctions as ‘economic terrorism.’
Iran has rejected claims from Western countries that it sent short-range missiles to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine. They also promised to respond to new sanctions from three European countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, said in a statement that Iran hasn’t given any weapons to Russia. He called the sanctions by Britain, France, and Germany “economic terrorism” and said the people of Iran would be affected. He also warned that the European countries would face “appropriate action.”
The sanctions were announced by France, Germany, and the UK after the US accused Iran of supplying weapons to Russia. These sanctions stop air service deals with Iran and put restrictions on Iran Air, limiting its flights to Europe.
The three European nations said they will also target important people and groups linked to Iran’s missile program and those helping Russia with weapons.
Kanaani didn’t mention the sanctions from the US, but he denied that Iran sold missiles to Russia, calling it “completely false.”
On the same day, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking in London, claimed that Russia received missiles from Iran and may use them soon in Ukraine. He also warned that the partnership between Moscow and Tehran could threaten Europe’s security. Blinken added that Russian soldiers had been trained in Iran to use the Fath-360 missile, which has a range of 120km (75 miles).
Kanaani, posting on X (formerly Twitter), dismissed the reports as “ugly propaganda.” He said they were a way to hide the “illegal arms support” that the US and some Western countries are giving to Israel in its conflict with Gaza.
Iran already faces many sanctions, and experts say that more penalties might hurt regular people more than the country’s leaders.
