Sony’s new PS5 Pro needs a separate disc drive to play physical games, which shows they are pushing toward a more digital future.
The PS5 Pro is $699.99, unless you want to play games from a disc-in which case you have to spring for the $79.99 disc drive. Sony’s had disc-less consoles in the past, but this is the first one that’s completely sans built-in disc drive. You can even detach the disc drive on the slim PS5 and use it with the PS5 Pro.
What About Going Digital?
Microsoft is doing something similar. Their cheaper Xbox Series S doesn’t use discs, and a new disc-free version of the Series X is coming soon. Both Sony and Microsoft seem to be moving toward an all-digital world. Stores are also starting to drop physical games and movies. Big places like Best Buy, Target, and Redbox are no longer selling them.
PS5 Pro Disc Drive is a new addition to Sony’s gaming lineup, marking a significant shift towards a more digital future in gaming.
Going all digital can be great for people who’ve already switched to buying games online. But it comes with problems too. For example, if your account gets banned, if it’s hard to find games in old stores, or if developers remove games from their lists, you could lose access to the games you bought.

In the next few years, we are going to see how far Sony and Microsoft are going to go with this disc-free idea. The CEO of Xbox, Phil Spencer, affirms that they are not completely focused on going all digital, but at the same time, the importance of the digital games keeps growing. It means that the digital content is going to keep growing, and at the same time, it can be said that the physical media may slowly disappear. For now, if you are buying the PS5 Pro and game on disc is something you want to do, you will have to add another $79.99 to your budget for a disc drive.
