Well, Nike, a top sportswear brand that has consistently impressed, boasts the memorable slogan “Just Do It”—far more than just a simple catchphrase! Interestingly, the roots of this slogan trace back to a death row inmate.
Who could have predicted it would become the defining slogan for the most renowned sports brand over the years? In 1971, Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman launched a sneaker company. This company, initially named Blue Ribbon Sports, required a logo, which Carolyn Davidson created. Despite its growth in the 1980s, Nike was still perceived as a typical sports shoe brand. It hadn’t achieved the expected growth, especially as its competitor Reebok was progressively expanding its market share.
Something had to change.
In 1988, to address this, an advertising campaign was initiated, but the slogans proposed did not meet expectations. The series of commercials produced failed to evoke the desired emotion and cohesion.
Advertiser Dan Wieden, inspired by the last words of Gary Gilmore—a murderer who said “Let’s do it!” before his execution—adapted these words into “Just do it,” crafting Nike’s unforgettable slogan.
In July 1988, Nike debuted its first advertisement featuring the new slogan. The commercial gained significant attention, showcasing 80-year-old Walt Stack running 27 km daily, with “Just do it” prominently displayed. The slogan’s success stemmed from its resonance with athletes’ sentiments, providing motivation to push past their limits and becoming a symbol of endurance and perseverance.
This slogan enabled Nike to surpass its rivals and spurred a sales explosion. Over the next decade, its sales soared from $877 million to $9.2 billion, reaffirming its status as a powerhouse sports brand. It continues to collaborate with the same advertising agency.
