The West Bank shooting of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a 26-year-old US-Turkish woman and an American Activist, has sparked calls for a full investigation from the UN and the US after she was killed last Friday during a protest against Jewish settlement expansion in Beita, a town near Jenin.
Local news said Israeli soldiers shot her, and now the Israeli military is trying to figure out what exactly happened. Someone who saw it all told the media that they heard two gunshots at the protest.
The UN’s guy, Stéphane Dujarric, is like, “We need to totally check this out and make sure whoever did this answers for it.” He also said that people should always be safe, no matter what.
The US is also upset and wants answers. Sean Savett from the White House said they’re talking to Israel to get the lowdown and want an investigation started.
Right after Aysenur was shot, there’s video showing her being rushed into an ambulance. A Jewish-Israeli activist, Jonathan Pollak, who was there, said he saw soldiers aiming from a rooftop. He heard the shots, ran over, and found Aysenur bleeding under an olive tree. He tried to help her, but she was really hurt. This was her first time at a protest with this group that supports Palestinians. She was taken to a hospital in Nablus but didn’t make it.
The US Secretary of State and the President of Turkey are both really sad and mad about what happened. They called the shooting barbaric. Before all this, Aysenur had just graduated from the University of Washington . Her school said she was a great person who influenced others positively. The Israeli military said they were responding to someone throwing rocks and being a threat, but they’re still checking out what happened.
