Imane Khelif, a 25-year-old boxer from Algeria, did something awesome tonight! She made it to the Olympic boxing final and will fight for the gold medal. Khelif has been famous for a while because of a big issue. She wasn’t allowed to fight at first because of a test, but then she was allowed to fight in the Olympics. Even with all the stress and mean comments, she kept fighting and won her way to the final. She beat a boxer from Thailand at a famous tennis stadium that’s now a boxing place.
When the referee announced her victory, Khelif was so happy that she danced around the ring. If she wins a medal, she’ll be the first Algerian woman to get one in Olympic boxing.
After the match, Khelif didn’t talk about the gender issue. Instead, she praised her opponent and thanked her fans. She said, “She was very good, but I trained for two weeks and watched videos of how she fights. I’m one step from gold. Thank you to all the people who have stood by me, especially the people of Algeria.”
The controversy started when Khelif beat her Italian opponent, Angela Carini, in just 46 seconds, causing Carini to quit and cry, saying it wasn’t fair. This led to claims that Khelif isn’t a woman, which made the situation even more intense. In her previous fight against Hungarian Anna Luca Hamori, Khelif shouted, “I am a woman,” while crying.
Supporters of Khelif, including Anna Azout, a 26-year-old lawyer, and Nariman, a 50-year-old company director, have shown strong support. They believe Khelif has been unfairly treated due to sexism and racism.”A lot of fans came to see her fight, holding up the Algerian flag and shouting her name when she came in. During the fight, the crowd got louder and louder after each round, especially when Khelif’s opponent had to take a break after getting hit in the third round.”
