What is Sustainable Fashion?

So what is “sustainable fashion” really? It just means going in the greenest direction with our clothes, and that is what it is all about. What Is Sustainable Fashion And Why We Should Care About It

You may wonder, “Why bother with sustainable fashion?” Fashion is a big polluter. Mounds of the stuff get dumped into landfills every year, and mountainous amounts of unhealthy chemicals are used in producing our wardrobes. Not cool, right? Our conscious choices when it comes to sustainable fashion can help in reducing the waste we produce and pollutants. Not to mention, it just feels good wearing clothes that are the answer, not the problem!

Developing a Sustainable Closet

Sustainable Fashion: Why It Rocks & How to Build an Eco-Friendly Wardrobe. It is not that serious; you do not need to throw away all your clothes and start over. All you need to do is follow these simple steps:

Shop Less, Choose Wisely

On the environment, one of the most positive actions is buying less. I mean, shopping is fun and all — but how many variations of an outfit can one person have? Instead of getting lots of cheap stuff that breaks down quickly, choose investment pieces. Not quantity over quality, folks! It could be expensive initially, but will ultimately save you money and the planet as well.

Opt For Used or Thrift Clothing

This is literally one of the best and coolest things you can do for sustainable shopping: shop second-hand! Thrift stores are a goldmine, and you can find a bunch of awesome stuff there that no one else will have. By purchasing second-hand, you are also reducing the waste output since clothing doesn’t end up in a landfill. The next time you want some new fashion, check out your local thrift shops.

Choose Sustainable Brands

Many labels only turn out good-for-the-planet offerings. Look for labels treated with dioxin-free ink, or when quitting smoking advertising gets to you at the liquor store checkout and stock up on brands that use all eco materials without taking advantage of 9-year-old kids. Conscious Clothing Brands: Patagonia, Everlane, Reformation. They may cost more, but remember it’s all about buying less and purchasing what matters.

Take Care of Your Clothes

Keeping your stuff well is an easy way to be a better shopper. That means washing them less (and in turn, they last longer), and when you do wash, use cold water because it saves on energy. Hang your clothes where they can dry instead of using the dryer — and sew up those little holes or missing buttons before you throw them away. Other than that, look after your clothes and they will do the same for you.

DIY and Upcycle

Got a creative streak? Experiment with a little DIY on some of your clothes! If you take something old and then make cool new stuff out of it, that’s upcycling. That could mean anything from upcycling an old t-shirt into a cute crop top or adding some patches to your favorite jeans. Not only is upcycling extremely fun, but it’s a great way to be eco-friendly and express your one-of-a-kind taste in the world.

Swap Clothes with Friends

One of my favorite environmentally friendly ways to revamp your wardrobe is a clothes swap with friends. You bring clothes that you no longer wear and trade them with the other guests. It’s also a fun way to change up your style and not spend any money, plus you get the experience of getting quality clothes with friends. So next time you and your friends are bored, why not organize a clothing swap?

Sustainable Fashion Tips

It may sound like an arduous process, but putting together a more sustainable and Earth-loving closet actually is easier than you think. Sometimes, it just means small differences can completely change the game. Basically, buying less, looking at second-hand shopping from sustainable brands, caring for your clothes, DIY, and swaps.

But remember, every little bit counts. Begin with baby steps and try to insert sustainability into your wardrobe. Your planet (and your back pocket) will thank you!

I hope you found this post helpful, and best of luck with your eco-friendly shopping!
