Every time you blink, a little bit of tear fluid covers your eyeball. This fluid is special, and it’s not just plain water. These everyday tears are called ‘basal tears.’ They contain a mix of ingredients, including fats and water (lipids, mucin), along with some proteins (immunoglobulins), sodium compounds such as phosphate salts or bicarbonate, potassium salts like halide exchange carriers, and also certain antioxidants such as urate and ascorbate.
There are also reflex tears, which you get when something irritates your eyes, like if you’re caught in a storm or cut onions. These tears help wash away the irritants.
Finally, we have spiritual tears, which come from strong emotions. These are controlled by the limbic system in your brain and also affect the parasympathetic nervous system.
