Why Does It Happen?
No one really knows exactly why scopophobia starts, but here’s what experts think:
- Family Drama: If someone in your family has anxiety or a phobia, you might be more likely to get one too.
- Brain Stuff: The amygdala, which is the part of your brain that deals with fear, might be working overtime.
- Past Trauma: If you got bullied or humiliated as a kid, those bad memories can stick with you and turn into something like scopophobia.
What Can You Do About It?
Here’s the thing: Unless it’s really driving you crazy—like your missing school, work, or avoiding people completely—the diagnosis of scopophobia isn’t official. So, if that’s happening you may want to see a doctor or therapist. They could hint at therapy or meds maybe to help calm the anxiety. Scopophobia is something I think honestly a lot of us feel even a little bit to at least some extent with social media and stuff. There’s like, no, it’s hard not to think people are judging you all the time. But if it’s getting on you, don’t tough it out. You need some help and find out what is going on.
