Hey there! Let’s talk about the History of Olympics Games. These games were super important and were part of a big festival for Zeus, the main god in Greek mythology. The festival and games took place in Olympia, which was a special spot in Greece.
All the people who came to Olympia believed in the same gods and spoke Greek. The athletes were all guys from different Greek cities. They came from places as far as Spain and Turkey. It was a big deal for them to be there!
So do you know how the Olympics got its name? It’s from this really tall mountain in Greece called Mount Olympus. In old Greek stories, the gods lived up there! Anyway, the first Olympics happened like, a REALLY long time ago – 776 BC! Can you believe it? The first winner was this dude Koroibos, who was just a cook! He won a short race, like 600 feet or something. That was the only event back then, can’t believe how much it’s grown since!
I found out some cool stuff about the Olympics! Some people think it might have started even earlier than we thought, like way back in the 10th or 9th century BC! They found some old bronze tripods in Olympia and they think those might have been prizes for the winners a long time ago. That’s pretty sick!
And do you know the marathon? It wasn’t even part of the old Olympics! It’s actually a pretty new thing. They added it to the Olympics in 1896 in Athens. They got the idea from this ancient runner named Pheidippides. He ran a crazy long way – 149 miles! – to ask for help in a battle. Nowadays, the marathon is way shorter, like 26 miles. They decided on that distance in 1908 at the London Olympics. Pretty cool, right?
Now, about athletes running naked. There are two stories. One story says a runner named Orsippos from Megara lost his shorts in a race in 720 BC and finished the race naked. Another story says the Spartans started this tradition in the 8th century BC. By the late 8th century, it was normal for male athletes to compete naked.
The Olympics used to happen a long time ago, from 776 BC to 393 AD. Then, they stopped for a really long time. But, this French guy named Pierre de Coubertin brought them back in 1896 in Athens. He wanted to have the first new Olympics in Paris in 1900, but people liked his idea so much that they did it earlier! The Olympic torch we see today first showed up in 1928 in Amsterdam. They didn’t run with the torch in the old games, but they did it in other Greek festivals. The torch relay we know today started in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. And, athletes first promised to play fair (that’s the Olympic Oath) in 1920.Over time, more events were added to the ancient Olympics. By the 5th century BC, the festival lasted five days. There were no Winter Games in ancient times. The first Winter Olympics happened in 1924 in Chamonix, France. Starting in 1994, the Summer and Winter Games are held in alternating even years to make it better for TV.
The Olympic flag with five rings (one for each color found in national flags) was introduced in 1908. This symbol is a modern thing and wasn’t used in ancient times.
In ancient Greek competitions, long jumpers used weights to jump farther. Their coach would be there too, watching and helping out.
That’s the real story of the old Olympics! It’s pretty cool to see how it all began and how it’s different now. Hope you thought this was interesting!
