Sheikh Hasina Resigns, Dhaka Celebrates Amid Protests: Dhaka Protests 2024

Breaking News:

Sheikh Hasina leaving has calmed things down in Dhaka after intense Dhaka Protests 2024, where people were afraid more violent protests would happen on Monday.

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, has quit and left the country because of ongoing protests.

Sheikh Hasina, who led the country for a long time, got on a military helicopter, according to an aide who told Al Jazeera, after crowds ignored a national curfew and stormed the prime minister’s palace in Dhaka on Monday.

Around 300 people have died in weeks of protests that the authorities tried to stop. After a night of deadly violence that killed about 100 people on Sunday, the tension was still high on Monday as protesters planned a march on Dhaka and the army got ready to speak to the nation.

By early afternoon, however, the mood on the streets changed to celebration after the news of Hasina’s departure spread.

In a speech to the nation, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the Chief of Army Staff, asked people to trust the army, saying they would bring peace back to the country.

“We will look into all the killings that happened over the past few weeks,” he said, confirming that the prime minister has quit and that an interim government will now run the country. He also mentioned he would meet the president soon.

National TV showed thousands of people breaking into the prime minister’s official residence. It also showed large crowds of protesters celebrating in the streets as the news of Hasina’s departure spread.

Al Jazeera’s Tanvir Chowdhury, reporting from Shahbag Square – the center of the student protests – said he has “never seen anything like this” in the capital.

“Students and families with their children are out celebrating, checking if she has either left the country or resigned,” Chowdhury said. “The government has probably fallen, and the army will decide what happens next, which is likely an interim government,” he added.
