Suryakumar Yadav has been announced as the new T20I captain for India tour of Sri Lanka 2024. This decision comes after he was preferred over Hardik Pandya, who served as the vice-captain of the squad that won the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies in June.
Suryakumar’s New Role
Suryakumar’s leadership will be tested in the three T20Is scheduled for July 27, 28, and 30. This series also marks the first assignment for India’s new coach, Gautam Gambhir. The tour is seen as a significant step in preparing for the next T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2026. Although Hardik is still part of the T20I squad, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the vice-captain.
Background and Experience
Gill recently captained India in a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, following the T20 World Cup. The need for a new captain arose after Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is post-World Cup victory. Although Hardik served as Rohit’s deputy and has significant captaincy experience, leading India in three ODIs and 16 T20Is, as well as Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians in the IPL, fitness concerns and workload management influenced the selection panel’s decision, led by Ajit Agarkar.
Hardik’s Fitness Concerns
Hardik suffered an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup last year and was out of action until the start of IPL 2024, where he returned to lead Mumbai Indians. Since the beginning of 2022, Hardik has participated in only 46 of India’s 79 T20Is, highlighting his fitness challenges.
Suryakumar’s Leadership Qualities
Suryakumar has captained the Mumbai state team in domestic cricket. More recently, he led India to a 4-1 series win over Australia in T20Is last November, followed by a 1-1 series draw in South Africa. His leadership skills and consistent performance have earned him this significant role.
Squad for the Sri Lanka Tour
Suryakumar was not included in the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka tour, and Hardik is also taking a break from 50-over internationals.
The appointment of Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain marks a new era for the team. With a mix of experienced players and new talent, India’s squad is gearing up for an exciting series in Sri Lanka. The focus now shifts to building a strong team for the future, with an eye on the 2026 T20 World Cup.
