US intelligence just confirmed that Iran Hacked Trump campaign. The FBI and other agencies said Iran messed with the US election to create chaos and make people doubt democracy.
On August 10, the Trump campaign accused Iran of hacking its internal messages, but Iran denied it.
Sources told CBS News that Iranian hackers also went after Kamala Harris’s campaign.
US intelligence officials said they’re sure Iran used tricks like social engineering to get access to people involved in both Trump’s and Harris’s campaigns. They added that these hacks were meant to mess with the US election process.
The Trump campaign reportedly got a spear-phishing email, which is a fake email that looks legit but has a bad link.
Harris’s campaign said they were also hit with a spear-phishing attack, but it didn’t work.
The agencies, including the FBI and others, said these tactics aren’t new, and that Russia and Iran have done similar things in past US elections.
It’s still unclear what, if anything, was stolen during the hack. Trump said the hackers only got public information.
Reports from The New York Times, Politico, and The Washington Post said they got leaked info from inside the Trump campaign, including stuff about vetting his running mate, JD Vance. But they haven’t shared details yet.
US officials believe Iran wants to influence the election because it could affect its national security.
They also noticed that Iran has been more aggressive during this election.
Recently, Microsoft warned about increasing activity from Iran-linked groups. And before he dropped out of the race, Biden’s campaign was also targeted by Iranian hackers, just like Trump’s, according to Google.
