Iran’s Possible Attack on Israel: All you need to know

The Whole world has it’s eyes on Iran for Iran’s Possible Attack on Israel as the revenge. There’s talk that Iran’s top leader has ordered a direct hit on Israel.

Iran was the reason 57 countries in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting had an emergency session Wednesday at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. They discussed the assassination in Tehran last week of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh. This killing led to a ‘severe and violent revenge’ promise from Iran’s leader Ayatollah Khamenei.Iran's Possible Attack

Both Iran and Hamas believe that Israel is responsible for the assassination, though Israel hasn’t said anything. Iran’s acting foreign minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, said Iran has “no choice” but to respond. He didn’t say when or how but mentioned it would be a defense of Iran and the region’s security.

Haniyeh was killed in a highly protected guesthouse in Tehran, which was a huge embarrassment for Iran’s military, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Ever since, everyone’s been watching Iran for clues on how they might hit back, fearing it could lead to a bigger conflict with Israel.

But Iran’s foreign minister didn’t give any hints, and the West seems unsure about Iran’s plans.

In April, there was an attack on Iran’s diplomatic compound in Damascus, Syria, killing eight IRGC officers. This attack was also believed to be by Israel, causing another embarrassment for Iran. Iran later shot over 300 missiles and drones at Israel, but almost all were intercepted, so it didn’t do much damage.Iran's Possible Attack

Last week, U.S. officials thought Iran might be planning something bigger this time to avoid another failure. But recent reports say that because of how Haniyeh was killed—possibly with help from inside Iran instead of an airstrike—and since no Iranians were killed, Iran might rethink its plans.

Diplomatic efforts are also in play. Jordan’s foreign minister visited Iran, and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, asking him to avoid more military escalation.

Meanwhile, everyone’s waiting for an attack from Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran in Lebanon. They’re angry because Israel killed one of their top commanders, Fuad Shukr, just before Haniyeh’s assassination.

Israeli military targets have been hit by Hezbollah, but neither side seems to want an all-out war. However, the situation remains particularly volatile on Israel’s frontier with Lebanon. Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, said in a statement that the rebel attacks would be met with an “appropriate and strong response.”

Hezbollah once lobbed rockets into Israel after its leaders were killed, so a symbolic retaliation is probable but will likely remain within the group’s conventional tactic of firing from behind civilian shields.Iran's Possible Attack

In Lebanon, people are worried about getting dragged into a conflict with Israel, especially since they still remember the 2006 war. But Iran needs Hezbollah strong since they play a big role in Iran’s plans, especially if Israel attacks Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Hezbollah is part of Iran’s “Axis of Resistance,” which includes other groups like the Houthis in Yemen and militias in Iraq. These groups have also attacked Israel and Western targets recently.

It’s not clear if Iran and its allies will work together on their response, but U.S. media reports suggest Hezbollah might act first, on its own.

This week, Gen Michael Kurilla, head of the U.S. Central Command, visited Israel to check on security. The U.S. is expected to help protect Israel if Iran attacks.

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said Israel will “exact a heavy price” for any attack.

As everyone waits, flights in Israel and Lebanon are being canceled, airlines are avoiding their airspaces, and foreign governments are telling their citizens to leave. Some people are getting ready for war, and the region might slip into one, either by accident or on purpose.
