South Africa 344 for 8 (Bavuma 86, de Zorzi 78, Warrican 3-66) vs West Indies
So, South Africa scored 344 runs for 8 wickets in the Windies vs South Africa Day 2. Tony de Zorzi, who opened for South Africa, got out for 78 before lunch. He was chilling on the balcony, reading Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World.” It was kind of funny because what was happening on the field was nothing like the book’s crazy world. It was just good, old-school Test cricket, like the coach Shukri Conrad said it would be.
Most of the South African batters did okay, but only Aiden Markram didn’t get a start. De Zorzi and Temba Bavuma both scored half-centuries, and there were a few big partnerships, but no one hit a century. The West Indies bowlers did their job, but the pitch was pretty flat, so it was hard for them to trouble the batsmen too much. The pitch was dry and didn’t have much bounce, so it was all about patience.
West Indies’ bowlers Kemar Roach and Jason Holder tried to keep things tight, but they were punished when they made mistakes. In the first few overs, Holder was a bit short, and de Zorzi took advantage of it. Roach was a bit too full, and Tristan Stubbs hit him well but got out quickly.
De Zorzi reached 50 off 78 balls, which was great, especially since it was his first time opening in Test cricket. But he got out before reaching a century. Bavuma, who was cautious because it was his first Test since March, eventually started scoring confidently and reached his 50 as well.
David Bedingham came in after lunch and showed his skills, hitting some nice shots. Bavuma scored his first boundary in a while and looked set for a big score, but he got out for 80.
The lower order then had to bat, and though the West Indies managed to get a few more wickets, Mulder and Kagiso Rabada pushed South Africa’s score up. The team will hope to add more runs on the third day.
