Hezbollah Pager Explosions: What We Know So Far

On Tuesday, something shocking happened. The Hezbollah Pager Explosions in Lebanon have left many injured and raised serious concerns about security breaches within the group. Sadly, 9 people died and 2,800 were injured.

The weird thing is, nobody knows how it happened. But it seems like it was planned. Hezbollah thinks Israel did it, but Israel hasn’t commented yet.

When and where did it happen?
The explosions started in Beirut (Lebanon’s capital) and other places around 3:45 PM on Tuesday. Witnesses said they saw smoke coming from people’s pockets before hearing small explosions like fireworks or gunshots. There’s even CCTV footage showing a man’s pocket exploding while he was at a shop. The explosions kept happening for about an hour. Hospitals were soon filled with injured people, causing a lot of chaos.

How did the pagers explode?
Experts were shocked because Hezbollah is known for its strict security. Some thought a hack might’ve caused the pagers’ batteries to overheat, but that seems unlikely. A more probable explanation is that the pagers were tampered with during manufacturing or while being shipped. Security officials believe small amounts of explosives were hidden in the pagers months before they even arrived in Lebanon. These explosives may have been set off remotely.

Who were the victims?
A source close to Hezbollah said two of the people killed were sons of Hezbollah MPs. The daughter of a Hezbollah member also lost her life. Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, was injured, though his wounds weren’t serious. Most injuries were to people’s faces and hands, with some even needing amputations. The victims included people of all ages, from young kids to healthcare workers.

Who’s responsible?
No one’s officially taken responsibility, but fingers are pointed at Israel. Both Hezbollah and Lebanon’s Prime Minister are calling them out.

Hezbollah’s furious, saying Israel targeted innocent civilians. They’re warning Israel to expect payback. But here’s the twist: some US and Israeli officials claim the explosions were actually meant to be part of a bigger move against Hezbollah. Apparently, plans changed and the devices went off earlier than planned. Sounds like a messy situation!

Why does Hezbollah use pagers?
Hezbollah uses pagers to avoid being tracked by Israel. They don’t use mobile phones because Israel can easily track and attack them, as they did with a Hamas bomb-maker in 1996. However, these pagers were new and hadn’t been used by Hezbollah before. Around 5,000 of these devices were brought to Lebanon five months ago. The manufacturer of the pagers, a Taiwanese company named Gold Apollo, denied involvement, saying they made the devices for a European company. Now, local police are investigating the company.

What’s next for Hezbollah and Israel?
Hezbollah and Israel have been in a low-level conflict for a while, often exchanging rocket fire. Some worry that these explosions could make things worse. Israel recently made the return of its northern residents an official war goal, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said they’ll do whatever is needed to protect the country. Even though both sides have tried to avoid a full-scale war, tensions are rising, and it’s unclear what will happen next.
