Windies vs South Africa Day 1 was almost totally ruined by rain. Only a little bit of the game was played – just 15 overs. South Africa ended the day with 45 runs and only lost one guy, with Tony de Zorzi still going strong with 32 runs and Jason Holder getting one guy out for just 2 runs. They won the coin toss and chose to hit the ball first, trying to take advantage of a pitch with no grass. Their captain, Temba Bavuma, thought it was a good plan to start off well.
However, West Indies bowler Kemar Roach made things tough for them right from the start. He bowled really well, keeping Aiden Markram on the back foot. Markram managed to hit one lucky shot over gully, but he was struggling overall. Roach’s first spell was very tight, giving away just 6 runs in 5 overs.
On the other side, Tony de Zorzi looked more comfortable. He played some nice shots, especially when facing Jayden Seales, who wasn’t very threatening in his first few overs. Then, West Indies captain Kraigg Braithwaite brought in spinner Gudakesh Motie in the eighth over. De Zorzi hit some big shots right away, so Braithwaite took Motie out of the game after just two turns of bowling.
Aiden Markram, who had been struggling at the crease, was bowled out by Jason Holder for just 9 runs. This was the third time in a row that Markram had failed to score big in the first innings of a Test match. His poor form is something he’ll need to work on as the season continues.

After Markram’s wicket, Tristan Stubbs came in to bat at number 3. He managed to score a single run before rain interrupted play at 11:10 AM local time. The rain continued off and on, and although the ground staff tried to clean up, the day was eventually called off with no more play possible.
This was particularly frustrating for South Africa, as they haven’t played a Test match with their main squad since January and don’t have many Tests left in this World Test Championship cycle. They have just seven more matches in this period, and all their series in 2023-2025 are limited to just two Tests each.
